The Asturian Valley cows are a dual-purpose breed of cattle that are raised for meat and milk production. The breed originated from the valleys of Asturias, Spain and belongs to an exclusive bovine group in Spain called the tronco Cantábrico (‘Cantabric back’).
It was used for meat and milk production and used for draught work purposes. But their significance as dairy cattle breed has decreased since other highly effective dairy cattle breeds have been released to Spain.

The team tronco Cantábrico includes the strains indigenous. The breed is also understood by a few other names like Asturiana Occidental, Asturiana de Los Valles, and Carreñana. The Asturian Valley cattle maintain the biggest number of the group.
Currently, the strain is raised on the Bay of Biscay from the northern regions and the river valleys at the base of the Cordillera Cantábrica mountain range.
