The Eyelash Viper or tan palm-pitviper (Bothriechis schlegelii) is a venomous pit viper snake species located in Central America and northern South America, without a subspecies currently known.
They’re definitely the most frequent species of this genus Bothriechis, both the green palm-pitvipers, also therefore so are quite often within zoo displays. The species-specific title”schlegelii” has been credited in honor of their German ornithologist, Hermann Schlegel.
They’re also known by several other popular titles such as eyelash pit viper, eyebrow palm viper, eyelash palm-pitviper, Schlegel’s pit viper, Schlegel’s viper, Schlegel’s palm viper, eyelash lancehead, eyebrow snake, and semen mountain viper and horned palm viper.
The herbaceous viper range goes from southern areas of Mexico around the Atlantic plains and lowlands throughout Central America to northern regions of South America at Venezuela and Colombia. The species is located in the Pacific and lowlands versant in areas of Ecuador, and Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama, Peru.
Their habitat ranges from tropical rainforests, wooded cloud and montane forests to dense sea-level woods or streamside plant in lowlands and foothills.

The pit viper happens at elevations from sea level up to 2600 meters in elevation. They also use their tail to maneuver around foliage and trees.
The Eyelash viper, such as most of the pit vipers, owns heat-sensitive organs, also known as pits, situated on both sides of the head, between the nostrils and eyes.
These organs are complicated structures which let them locate possible prey by their own body warmth, a fantastic evolutionary adaptation into some predator who hunts mostly at nighttime.
These little and arboreal snakes have been characterized by a vast selection of color variants, in addition to the superciliary scales across the eyes out of which contrasts their name. All these”lashes” are thought to assist the snake’s claw one of the leaves where they conceal.
Their color varies considerably ranging from brown, red, yellow, green or perhaps pink, quite often with brownish or black speckling, the bottom color is generally determined by the snake’s geographic site. They’ve keeled scales that sense sharp and dull screen.
The herbaceous viper is thought to be a little to midsize pit viper and can be among the tiniest venomous snakes found in Central America. Whereas men measure approximately 37 to 69 cm long females are measuring 35 to 82 cm.
Due to their arboreal character, the eyebrow viper weighs less and can be much shorter than the terrestrial pit vipers such as the bushmaster or even fer-de-lance. They have students and a binocular vision and have ahead.
Though their durability in captivity will exceed 16 years that their projected lifespan in the wild will be roughly a decade. A few of their predators include large mammals birds of prey, such as hedgehogs, badgers, foxes but also fish, snakes and of course individuals.
The herbaceous vipers is a favorite species from the exotic pet industry and therefore can be observed in zoos across the world. They have been sent around concealed one of banana imports. They won’t be afraid to strike if they’re threatened or harassed although eyelash vipers are not considered snakes.
Eyelash Viper Subspecies
Currently, there are not any subspecies recognized. Some scientists understand a sort of the viper.
Known as the herbaceous mountain viper or even the blotched palm-pitviper, it’s either regarded as a full species (B. supraciliaris) or even some subspecies (B. s. supraciliaris).
Eyelash Viper Venom
The herbaceous viper venom is principally hemotoxic but also neurotoxic, including procoagulants and hemorrhagic substances. It impacts the central nervous system and the system, which makes it deadly to people, and poisonous.
They exude the venom with their two exceptionally long fangs, based on the top law, these stay folded back in their mouth when they are not being used.
While they’re not thought to be aggressive snakes, lithium pit vipers have bitten individuals who venture too near. The sting can lead to discomfort, swelling, quite necrosis formation and swelling, if left untreated, it may result in lack of a limb, and sometimes even be deadly.
Eyelash Viper Diet
A grownup eyelash viper preys on small mammals, birds and nestlings, lizards, frogs, rodents, snakes, and marsupials. Though the Allied snakes prey chiefly on small cows, occasionally using”caudal luring”, in which they are able to emphasize their tail motivating an expected prey to come within the striking selection.
The eyelash pit viper is mostly a predator, however, throughout the daytime, they’re also effective at shooting moving prey such as flying hummingbirds. In order that they are able to make the most of critters spring migration these snakes have been known to go back to a ambush site.
Like many pit vipers, they’re a standard”sit-and-wait” ambush form predator, exposing their prey by injecting and surprise their highly poisonous hemotoxic and also neurotoxic venom. They wait for the victim prior to swallowing it whole to expire.

The men participate in a wonderful courtship ritual referred to as”dancing of these adders”. Inside, both men attempt to bully one another together with all the mind along with the forepart of this body held upright into a”cobra-like” posture. Before one is pushed off into the floor this occasionally might go on for hours, there’s not any biting at the ritual.
The eyebrow viper is an ovoviviparous species the female incubate the eggs during the gestation period of about 6 weeks. Following the gestation, the eggs hatch inside the mother’s body, and the hatchlings are produced.
Except for their own body size, approximately 15 to 20 cm, so the younglings are similar to mature snakes and are totally outfitted and separate from birth. Females bear anywhere from two to 20 stay young.
