The Italian Landrace pig is a strain of domestic pig from Italy. It’s also referred to as Landrace Italiana along with the strain derives from the Danish Landrace pig breed which was created in Denmark at the end of the century.
The stock of this Landrace breed was imported into Italy after the Second World War. Presently the Italian Landrace pig is the second most pig breed in Italy after the White Italiana.
In Italy, the breed has been chosen and raised principally for the prosciutto credo production. Other smaller strain the ‘Belgian Landrace’ can be increased for new meat production generally in Italy.
Italian Landrace Pig Characteristics
The Italian Landrace pigs are big animals. They have big drooping ears and their jacket is of white color.
They have a lengthy body mainly due to the existence of two or even three supernumerary vertebrae (they’ve 15-16 instead of the normal 13). Their hair is white and the skin is unpigmented.

The fully grown Italian Landrace boars on typical weight approximately 225-320 kg. And the typical bodyweight of this fully sows range from 200 to 275 kg.
Meat production from the Italian Landrace is generally from crosses with either the White Italiana or the Duroc Italiana breed 170 kg all of it’s used to create meat products that are maintained. The breed is suitable for both extensive and intensive pig farming methods. But it is farmed intensively.

The breed has been effective for improving the growth and quality of pig in Italy since it’s bred along with other pig breeds as well as the pigs. Most of the pig farmers like milk production, litter size and capability to take care of large litters. The Italian Landrace pig has all these attributes.
A herdbook for the breed is kept by the Associazione Nazionale Allevatori Sunni, the national pig-breeders’ association. Along with also the genealogical herdbook for the strain was created in 1970.
The Landrace pig breed standard is issued from the Ministero Delle Politiche Agricole Alimentari e Forestali, the ministry of forestry and agriculture.
