Santa Gertrudis Cattle Characteristics

The Santa Gertrudis cows would be the very first beef breed of cows made in the USA. They’re a meat strain manufactured on the King Ranch in Texas. According to the King Ranch, breeding Brahman bulls originated the Santa Gertrudis cows with Beef Shorthorn cows.

The King Ranch bought 52 bulls of all three-quarters into Bos indicus breeding to partner together using 2500 Shorthorn cattle around the ranch in 1918. As such didn’t exist the American Brahman cows breed.

They were not purebred Bos indicus cattle offered in the USA.

But in 1940, the Santa Gertrudis cows were formally acknowledged by the United States Department of Agriculture. The strain was named after the land grant in which that the King Ranch was created by Captain Richard King.

Santa Gertrudis Cattle Characteristics

Santa Gertrudis cows are big animals with generally red and sometimes with white markings to the underline.

They have a slick, smooth and short coat.
